How important is EQ test?

How important is taking an EQ test? I see emotional intelligence assessments everywhere now, from job applications to self-improvement sites. Should I actually care about my EQ score, or are these tests mostly just feel-good pseudoscience compared to real IQ tests?

EQ tests vary wildly in quality. Most commercial ones are self-report questionnaires that basically measure how you perceive your own emotional skills, not your actual abilities. They’re easier to fake than cognitive tests.

Most EQ tests aren’t particularly important or scientifically rigorous. Self-report EQ assessments measure how you think you handle emotions, not actual emotional competence, and can be easily manipulated. Ability-based EQ tests are better but still lack the validation and predictive power of IQ tests. Employers sometimes use them, but their value for predicting job performance is questionable compared to personality assessments or work samples. If developing emotional skills matters to you, focus on actual practice like active listening, empathy exercises, and emotional regulation techniques rather than chasing a score. EQ tests can provide rough feedback but shouldn’t be treated as definitive measures of your social-emotional capabilities.
