Emotional intelligence

What is emotional intelligence and is it a real thing? I hear people talk about EQ like it’s as scientifically valid as IQ, but is there actual research backing it up? Can emotional skills really be measured the same way cognitive abilities are?

Emotional intelligence supposedly involves recognizing, understanding, and managing emotions in yourself and others. It includes skills like empathy, emotional regulation, and social awareness. But the scientific status is debated.

Emotional intelligence is controversial scientifically. While emotional and social skills obviously matter, EQ tests lack the psychometric rigor of IQ tests. The concept overlaps heavily with personality traits like agreeableness and conscientiousness rather than being a distinct form of intelligence. Some researchers distinguish ability EQ (actual emotional processing skills) from trait EQ (self-reported emotional competencies), with ability measures being more valid. The main issue is that EQ is often marketed as equally important to IQ without comparable scientific foundation. Emotional skills are real and valuable, but whether they constitute “intelligence” in the psychometric sense remains disputed.

This article addresses the question very comprehensively:

Waterhouse reviews EQ (along with multiple intelligences and the Mozart Effect) and finds that they lack empirical support.
