Who administers IQ Test / Psychologists

I’m trying to understand who is actually qualified to administer IQ tests and what the process looks like. I know psychologists can do it, but I’m not sure what kind of training or credentials are required.

Who is qualified to administer IQ tests? Do all psychologists have this training, or is it a specialized skill? And what does the process of professional IQ testing actually involve?

Licensed clinical or school psychologists administer IQ tests. They need specialized graduate training in assessment and supervised practice. Not all psychologists can do it. The process takes 1-3 hours with multiple subtests, then you get a detailed report. Costs $500-2000. For clinical purposes, only use licensed psychologists.

Clinical, school, or neuropsychologists with specific assessment training can administer IQ tests. Testing takes 1-3 hours, covers multiple cognitive areas, and you get a detailed report with subscores. Costs $500-2000. For diagnosis or official purposes, see a psychologist. For personal curiosity, RIOT works fine online.

When we talk about administering IQ tests, we’re actually bundling several distinct skills. The mechanical part (reading prompts, timing responses, recording answers) can sometimes be delegated to trained psychometrists or testing assistants working under supervision. But selecting the right test battery, noticing when a child is too anxious for valid results, recognizing cultural factors that might skew scores, and integrating IQ data with developmental history and behavioral observations is where the expertise of psychologists become crucial. The administration is really just the middle step in a much longer assessment process.

Who can administer IQ tests depends heavily on the setting. In private practice, clinical psychologists operate under different licensing boards. In universities, graduate students might administer tests under faculty supervision for studies. In forensic settings, additional credentialing might apply. The "who” question really can’t be separated from the “where” and “why.”
