If you could ditch the IQ test tomorrow and replace it with a single, better assessment tool, what would it be?
Is there a single alternative that could gain the same kind of traction as the IQ score, or are we stuck having to use a battery of tests to get a meaningful picture?
There isn’t a better single measure than IQ for general cognitive potential—that’s why it’s lasted 100+ years. Alternatives like personality tests or achievement tests measure different things entirely. If you want a fuller picture, you need multiple assessments, but nothing replaces IQ’s ability to predict problem-solving across domains. You can add context around it, but there’s no superior replacement for what it does.
@VeronicaTale Thanks for your response to my post! I can see that. I guess my goal was also to explore supplementary tests. But I understand how IQ testing remains superior for this purpose.
I can never imagine IQ testing being replaced or if there is any good alternative, but if I’m gonna answer this one, I’d go with comprehensive school-based assessments. The key advantage is that it can measure potential through actual performance over time, not just a snapshot. You’re not pulling a student out for a one-time test, you’re observing their capabilities in authentic learning environments where they’re already spending their time. This makes the assessment more meaningful and less anxiety-inducing than traditional testing.
