What is Marilyn Monroe’s IQ? I keep seeing claims online that she had a genius-level IQ of 168 or something ridiculously high. Is there any actual evidence she ever took an IQ test or are people just making this up to counter the “dumb blonde” stereotype?
Hasn’t this become one of those internet facts that gets repeated without any real source? Don’t people want to believe she was secretly brilliant because it makes for a better story? Is there any documentation of her actually taking a standardized IQ test or is this completely fabricated?
There’s zero credible evidence Marilyn Monroe ever took an IQ test or that any score was recorded. The 168 number appears to be completely invented and spread through social media. While Monroe was clearly intelligent in many ways, well-read, ran her own production company, and studied method acting seriously, that doesn’t mean she had a documented genius-level IQ. This is a perfect example of people projecting what they want to believe onto a celebrity. The “secret genius” narrative is appealing because it subverts the blonde bombshell image, but it’s not based on any historical record. We simply don’t know what her IQ was because she never took the test publicly.
Whether the number is real or not may be beside the point. Monroe taught herself method acting under Lee Strasberg, ran her own production company at a time when actresses almost never did that, and negotiated her own contracts against a major Hollywood studio — and won. Whatever number you assign to that, the conventional picture of her as simply a “dumb blonde” is clearly the bigger fiction.
Why do we need a number to give ourselves permission to take her seriously? The demand for proof of her intelligence says more about our discomfort with her image than it does about her actual mind.
