What is Chat GPT'S IQ?

I’ve seen people online trying to estimate ChatGPT’s IQ by having it take various tests or solve problems. Some claim it scores very high, while others say the comparison doesn’t even make sense.

Does ChatGPT have an IQ? Can you even measure AI intelligence using human IQ tests? And how does AI intelligence compare to human intelligence?

ChatGPT doesn’t have an IQ, that’s not how AI works. IQ tests measure human cognition like memory and reasoning, but AI just predicts patterns from training data. It can solve some test questions but fails at stuff a 5-year-old could do. Comparing them is pointless, they’re completely different types of systems. The whole “AI IQ” thing is just hype and doesn’t really mean anything.

No, giving AI an IQ score makes no sense. ChatGPT can handle some reasoning tasks but completely fails at others because it doesn’t actually understand anything. It’s pattern matching, not thinking. IQ tests are built for human brains with real memory and comprehension. Trying to measure AI intelligence with human tests is like measuring a car’s intelligence by how well it runs a marathon. Just a bad comparison.

An LLM processes millions of text patterns instantly but has no subjective experience, no survival instincts, no ability to learn from a single correction in the moment. It’s not “smarter” or “dumber” than humans. It’s just operating in a completely different ontological category. It’s faster and more accurate, sure, but “smarter” implies something ChatGPT simply isn’t participating in.

Are we really desperate to fit AI into our existing status hierarchies? Is it important to know if it’s above us or below us? But maybe AI is the first thing that forces us to admit intelligence isn’t actually a single hierarchy. ChatGPT just makes it impossible to ignore that intelligence is a multidimensional landscape, and IQ was only ever one trail through one corner of it.
