What does it actually mean to have an average IQ and how many people actually fall into that range?

I keep seeing IQ scores thrown around online and everyone seems to think they are above average. What is the actual average IQ score and what range would you consider normal for a typical person? I also want to know how the scoring system actually works because I have seen different scales and I am not sure if a 100 on one test means the same thing as a 100 on another.

100 is always the mean by design and about 68 percent of people fall between 85 and 115. That is the normal range. 95 percent fall between 70 and 130. The scaling is standardized so scores from different well designed tests are roughly comparable, though broader assessments that cover more ability domains like RIOT IQ give you a more complete picture than a narrow battery. Pretty elegant system once you understand how the norming works :brain:

The everyone thinks they are above average thing is so real and honestly kind of funny :joy: It is called illusory superiority and it is one of the most robust findings in psychology. Taking an actual validated test is a humbling experience for most people and honestly I think more people should do it. You might be surprised in either direction :eyes:
