IQ and subclinical psychosis: The role of psychosocial stressors and core schemata

A new study using data from over 1,400 people across six European countries looked at whether IQ is linked to subclinical psychosis. That is, unusual experiences like mild paranoia or perceptual distortions that fall short of a diagnosable psychotic disorder. The researchers found that people with lower IQ scores tended to report more of these subclinical symptoms, even after accounting for things like age, sex, and life stressors. Interestingly, IQ itself didn’t have a strong direct effect on symptoms. Instead, the connection seemed to run through a few specific pathways: childhood trauma, stressful life events, and negative “schemata” (a psychology term for the deep-seated beliefs people hold about themselves and others, for example, “I am unworthy” or “other people are dangerous”).

The authors frame this through the “social defeat hypothesis,” which proposes that repeated experiences of low status, humiliation, or exclusion can raise psychosis risk over time. Under this lens, lower IQ might not cause psychotic-like experiences directly, but could make someone more vulnerable to accumulating stressful experiences and developing harsher self- and other-beliefs, and it’s those downstream effects that matter most. It’s worth noting the effect sizes here were small, and the study is cross-sectional (a single snapshot in time), so it can’t establish that low IQ causes these outcomes - reverse causality and other explanations remain possible.

What makes this study useful isn’t a dramatic headline finding, but how it points toward negative self/other-beliefs and stress exposure as potential targets for early support, rather than treating IQ as some kind of fixed risk marker on its own. As always with single-composite findings like this, it’s a reminder that IQ interacts with environment and psychology in complex ways.
