This systematic review examined 21 studies covering 1,716 pediatric patients to investigate whether hearing loss affects IQ scores in children. The findings suggest that children with untreated hearing loss tend to score lower on IQ testing than their normal-hearing peers, likely tied to disruptions during a critical developmental window when the auditory cortex and language-processing systems are especially responsive to sound input. Missing that window appears to affect language acquisition, which in turn is one of the strongest predictors of IQ development in children. The review also flagged that comorbid conditions (like those from congenital infections) and lower socioeconomic status can compound these effects, since kids with hearing loss from lower-SES households face a “double disadvantage” in language exposure.
The clinical takeaway is significant: this research underscores why early identification and intervention for pediatric hearing loss matters, since the data hints that timely treatment could help prevent or reduce IQ-related gaps down the line. That said, the authors are careful to flag real limitations, most studies were cross-sectional or retrospective rather than using prospective control-group designs, and there was a lot of variability in which IQ tests were used and which demographic factors were tracked. So while the association between hearing loss and lower IQ scores looks fairly consistent across the literature, more rigorous, prospective research is needed before drawing firm conclusions about causation or whether early intervention actually closes the gap.
