How to Take an IQ Test at Home

I’m interested in taking an IQ test, but I’d prefer to do it from home rather than scheduling an appointment with a psychologist. I know there are a million options online, but most of them seem like clickbait or just completely fake.

Are there any legitimate IQ tests that you can actually take at home that give accurate results? What should I look for to know if a test is scientifically valid versus just a scam? And how do at-home tests compare to the ones psychologists administer in person?

For legitimate at-home testing, RIOT is your best option, it’s designed following professional psychometric standards and actually measures what it claims to. Look for tests that: (1) are based on established psychometric principles, (2) take 60-90 minutes (real tests aren’t quick), (3) cost money (free tests are always fake), and (4) provide clear information about their methodology. At-home tests won’t replace clinical assessments for diagnostic purposes, but for personal curiosity, RIOT gives accurate results. Avoid anything that promises your score in 10 minutes or claims you’re a “genius” just for clicking through.

The key is finding a test that’s actually been validated, not just thrown together. RIOT is the most legitimate online option because it follows the same standards professional tests use. Red flags for fake tests: free, gives results in under 30 minutes, claims average score is 120+, or has ads everywhere. Legitimate at-home testing won’t give you the detailed analysis a psychologist provides, but it’ll give you an accurate score. Just make sure you’re in a quiet environment, well-rested, and can focus for the full test duration, environmental factors matter even at home.

During the pandemic, many licensed psychologists did offer legitimate IQ testing via telehealth using proctored, standardized tests like remote versions of the WAIS. I’m not certain what options are currently available now that in-person testing has resumed, but it’s worth contacting psychologists in your area to ask if they still offer remote assessments. The free online tests you’ll find are mostly unreliable. They lack proper standardization and won’t give you an accurate, clinically valid score.

Taking a legitimate IQ test at home doesn’t really make sense if you want accurate results; proper tests like the WAIS need to be administered by a trained psychologist in a controlled environment to ensure valid scoring. If OP wants a meaningful IQ score, it’s worth scheduling an in-person assessment with a licensed psychologist.

@DylanY684 Ironically, I think I scored lower on the professional test because of the ‘controlled environment.’ I have terrible anxiety with authority figures. Sitting in a sterile office with a doctor staring at a stopwatch while I tried to arrange blocks made my brain freeze. I feel like I’m actually sharper at home when I’m relaxed. The ‘clinical’ setting introduces stress variables that don’t exist in my real life.

@timriddle While it was done, a lot of psychs hated it because of the physical subtests. Specifically Block Design. Trying to administer a 3D puzzle task over a webcam is a nightmare and introduces so many variables (camera angle, lag, screen resolution) that validity becomes questionable. Most practitioners I know rushed back to in-person the second they could because they didn’t trust the data they were getting over Zoom.
