Comparing Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega reliability values

What’s the difference between Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega when measuring test reliability? I keep seeing both statistics in research papers but I don’t understand when to use which one or if one is better than the other.

Both measure internal consistency of a test, but aren’t they calculated differently? Doesn’t Cronbach’s alpha assume all items contribute equally while omega accounts for different item loadings?

Cronbach’s alpha has been the default reliability measure for decades, but it makes strict assumptions that often don’t hold in real data, particularly that all items are equally related to the construct (tau-equivalence). McDonald’s omega is more flexible and accurate because it’s based on factor analysis and accounts for items having different relationships to the underlying trait. In practice, alpha often underestimates true reliability. Omega is considered superior by modern psychometricians, but alpha remains more widely reported because it’s simpler to calculate and deeply entrenched in the field. If you see both reported, omega is typically the more trustworthy estimate.
