Are online IQ tests actually valid or are they all just entertainment masquerading as science? I know most commercial ones are scams, but are there any legitimate online IQ tests that have real psychometric validity, or do all credible tests require in-person administration?
Don’t online tests have major problems with controlling testing conditions and preventing cheating? Like can’t people just Google answers or take breaks whenever they want? How can any online test be considered valid when there’s no way to ensure standardized administration like you’d get with a psychologist?
Most commercial online IQ tests are worthless, designed to inflate scores and extract payment. However, some research-based online tests do have validity. RIOT IQ, Mensa’s proctored online test, and academic tests like the ICAR or Raven’s Progressive Matrices have actual psychometric backing. The key limitation is that even legitimate online tests can’t control testing conditions the way clinical administration does. They’re useful for ballpark estimates but won’t be as comprehensive or accurate as a WAIS-IV administered by a licensed psychologist. If you need results for diagnosis, accommodations, or official purposes, you need in-person testing. For personal curiosity, validated online options exist but should be interpreted cautiously.
