Where can I take a REAL IQ test online? I know most online tests are garbage or clickbait, but are there any legitimate, professionally recognized online IQ tests? Or do all credible tests have to be administered in person by a psychologist?

Isn’t Mensa’s online practice test somewhat reliable for a ballpark estimate? Don’t they also offer a proctored online admission test now? I’ve heard mixed things about whether online tests can truly be “official” since you can’t control testing conditions. What about tests from actual psychometric organizations?]

The most legitimate online option is probably the Mensa Supervised Home Test, which costs around $40-60 and is proctored. There are also research-based tests like RIOT IQ, ICAR, or Raven’s Progressive Matrices available online that have some validity. But honestly, no online test will be as comprehensive or accurate as an in-person WAIS-IV administered by a licensed psychologist. Online versions can give you a rough estimate, but they’re not diagnostic and won’t be accepted for official purposes.

Well, online tests could democratize access, but the moment you remove supervised conditions, you lose control over cheating, environmental factors, and verification. It’s a genuine dilemma: either maintain rigorous standards that exclude people based on circumstances unrelated to intelligence, or open access but sacrifice the reliability that makes the scores meaningful in the first place. Neither option is clearly better.

It really depends what you mean by “real.” The Mensa Supervised Test and Mensa Norway test are psychometrically sound and get you into Mensa, but a psychologist wouldn’t accept them for clinical purposes.
